Visiting Fort Sumter means spending time on a boat and walking through a 19th-century coastal fort. The weather on the water feels different than downtown Charleston. You need practical clothing to handle sun glare, harbor breezes, and uneven ground.

What shoes are best for the fort?

Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes.

Fort Sumter has uneven historic brick pathways and grassy terrain in the parade ground. High heels or thin sandals will make walking difficult. You have exactly 60 minutes to explore the island, so wear shoes that let you move quickly and safely.

How should I dress for the weather?

Dress in layers and bring a light jacket or windbreaker.

The 30-40 minute ferry ride across Charleston Harbor can be breezy and chilly. This happens even in warmer months. Once on the island, there is very little shade. If you visit during the hot and humid summer months, wear light, breathable fabrics.

What to wear to block the sun?

Wear sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat or visor.

The sun reflects strongly off the water during the harbor cruise. Sunglasses are necessary to combat this glare. Apply sunscreen before boarding. The ferry's open-air observation deck and the open grassy center of the fort leave you exposed to direct sunlight.

What items should I pack in my day bag?

Bring a reusable water bottle, a camera, and a credit or debit card.

Pack your day bag with items tailored to the sun and sea. Do not overpack. You will carry this bag during your entire 60-minute fort exploration.

Can I bring food or drinks?

No food or sugary drinks are allowed on Fort Sumter.

You can only bring clear water onto the island. The ferry has a snack bar selling food and hot drinks. You must finish eating before stepping onto the fort. Fort Sumter is a trash-free facility. You must pack out any trash you bring in.

What items are banned at Fort Sumter?

Weapons and pets are strictly prohibited.

Do not bring weapons, including concealed firearms, into park buildings or visitor centers. Pets are not allowed on the fort or in buildings, except for ADA-recognized service animals. You cannot access the fort using a private boat. You must use the authorized ferry.

Questions travellers ask

Does the fort sell bottled water?

The island is a trash-free facility with no bottle disposal. You should bring a reusable water bottle. Free filling stations are available at the Liberty Square visitor center and on the ferry.

Do I need cash for the ferry snack bar?

No. You should bring a credit or debit card. Ticket purchases and onboard concessions are largely cashless.

Are there places to sit in the shade?

There is very little shade outside on the island. You can step inside the indoor Fort Sumter Museum to escape the intense heat and humidity.
