The official ferry is the only permitted way to access the island fort.
Private boats cannot dock at Fort Sumter. All visitors must take the authorized concession-operated ferry from either Liberty Square or Patriots Point. The ride takes 30 to 40 minutes each way and offers views of the Charleston harbor.
You will need a paid ticket to board, typically starting from $35. Book in advance, as tours sell out. Dress in layers, as the harbor breeze makes the water chilly.

Find open-air seating on the deck for panoramic views of the Charleston skyline and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. Keep an eye out for Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and pelicans during your ride. Bring a light jacket to stay warm in the harbor wind.

The onboard concession stand sells snacks, sodas, and hot drinks. Buy and eat your snacks while on the boat. Food and sugary drinks are strictly banned once you step onto the island fort. Concessions are largely cashless, so bring a credit or debit card.
